Having a baby is a life-changing event that is different for everyone. It is important to get the right care for you and your baby. That means arranging referral to an antenatal clinic as soon as possible after you discover you’re pregnant. And our pregnancy hub has a host of information on every aspect of your pregnancy. There are several options for where you give birth to your baby.
At this time, messages were starting to flood in from friends of 12 week scans to the GP and they referred me to a local gynaecologist at a local private hospital. I found his website and noticed he had a Clinic in Epsom which wasn’t too far.
We advise women to ask their GP to refer to our maternity services as soon as they suspect that they are pregnant. You can also self-refer to us. Please complete one of the following online referral forms:. The maternity team at Epsom and St Helier Hospitals are committed to the absolute safety of our mothers, babies and staff. We have reviewed the situation and now have assurance that both London and South East Coast Ambulance services are back to usual response times. Our maternity staffing is currently also maintained at a safe level.
We are therefore pleased to be able to reinstate the home birth service at this time, with the following caveats:. We like to see women for the first booking-in appointment as early as possible, and ideally before 10 weeks of pregnancy. At this appointment your midwife will discuss all of the screening tests that are available to you in pregnancy which includes the ultrasound scans. This information is also available in a number of foreign languages – please see the ‘Leaflets and additional information’ section at the bottom of this page.
Most women follow a planned schedule of midwifery care which includes two ultrasound scan appointments. Mothers to be will then receive antenatal appointments from 25 weeks of pregnancy at around two to three week intervals. For women with more complicated pregnancies, care will be shared with one of our obstetric consultants or many of our different specialist services, depending on your specific needs.

The impact of multiparametric MRI on the staging and management of patients with suspected or confirmed ovarian cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the possibility of mpMRI providing an improved radiological assessment for the classification and delineation of the extent of disease for patients with suspected ovarian cancer compared to standard of care CT assessment, potentially facilitating more accurate decisions regarding patient management by the MDT.
Not available in web format, please use the contact details to request a patient information sheet. After all the scans have been obtained, the MDT at the site the medical team who make decisions about a patients care will then determine the stage and treatment plan for the patient based upon the CT alone, as per standard practice guidelines. Any critical findings from the mpMRI will be revealed to the MDT after they have made an initial decision; the patient will then progress with treatment, as decided.
The local MDT will then meet again for a further two meetings. In the second meeting they will produce theoretical treatment plans based upon the mpMRI alone and then another using a combination of the mpMRI and CT scan. This will not affect how the patient is treated. The third meeting will be 6 months after the patient was first enrolled onto the trial.
At this meeting all available clinical and imaging information will be reviewed and the MDT will determine what stage the patient was at and what the optimal treatment plan would have been. They will hold three separate meetings that will occur three months apart. These treatment plans will not have any effect on patient management.

Those are the heartbreaking words of a mother whose son suffered serious brain damage as a result of an “easily avoided” hospital staff error. The toddler underwent brain scans which revealed he had suffered kernicterus, a rare kind of brain damage caused by untreated jaundice in newborn babies. The now nine-year-old boy, who can only be referred to as “OXS” for legal reasons, was born in and following checks was sent home later that same day.
However, no arrangements to see OXS were made by the midwife but his c ondition improved over the following days. It was then confirmed that he had suffered jaundice in the days after his birth, which led to his brain injury and saw him develop cerebral palsy. The Trust admitted that OXS should not have been sent home without the results of the blood test being known; if he had remained in hospital the boy would not have suffered his injuries.
The money will pay for the round-the-clock care the boy will require for the rest of his life, as well as specialist therapies and equipment he requires. It will also fund an adapted home; OXS will never be able to live independently and has a shortened life expectancy. The annual report of the Fetal Medicine and Day Assessment Units contains detail about the workload, referral pattern, audits and academic outputs over the last year. A summary is presented below. This unit at St Georges Hospital provides both a routine local ultrasound service and a high quality tertiary referral service to the South-West Thames region. The fetal Medicine Unit workload has been steadily increasing over the last five years, and this is a reflection of increasing delivery rate at St Georges Hospital.
Not only has the number of routine scans increased, but referrals for fetal medicine and fetal echocardiography consultation has shown a sharper rise. This is almost certainly due to a combination of better screening quality at the referring hospitals and increased awareness amongst patients and healthcare workers alike.
